Roblox, the platform that lets users create, share and play games and experiences, has built an AI model that can translate text chats in real-time. The company says its ‘custom multilingual model’ translates chat messages so fast users won’t even notice that the other person is typing in a different language.
While AI-powered translation is not new, Roblox says its new system reduces the latency down to “approximately 100 milliseconds.” The company started developing a transformer-based large language model (LLM) that, apart from translating messages also recognises in-game slang and abbreviations like ‘obby’, ‘afk’ and ‘lol’.
The in-house developed LLM supports 16 languages including English, Japanese, French, Polish, Vietnamese, Thai and more and can easily translate between any pair of languages. While banned and curse words will still be blocked, users will be able to see the original message by tapping the icon that appears right to the name of the player.
In an interview with The Verge, Roblox CTO Dan Sturman said that it made sense for them to develop their own AI model instead of resorting to third-party solutions considering the scale of their project.
He added that in the future, the company plans to use AI to replace banned words with ones that aren’t banned and offer real-time voice translation capabilities. The company also seems to be working on automatically translating text that appears in images, textures and 3D models.
At its developer conference last year, Roblox announced new tools that will enable users to change the size, shape and texture of their avatars and import their own 3D models and images.
