OpenAI recently introduced a temporary chat mode on ChatGPT that offers a more private AI chatting experience. When you use this feature, available in both the desktop and app versions, the conversations won’t be kept in the history. OpenAI also claims the data from the temporary chat will not be used for training. However, the company might keep a copy of the chat for 30 days for safety.

A temporary chat on ChatGPT is quite similar to browsing the web in incognito mode. As soon as the window is closed, the history vanishes, although, in both cases, the service provider will have a copy of the browsing/chat data for a limited period. The temporary chat option is available for both free and paid users of ChatGPT.

According to OpenAI, “temporary chats won’t appear in your history and ChatGPT won’t remember anything that you talked about”.

To use ChatGPT’s temporary chat feature on a desktop, click on the top left corner that says “ChatGPT” and enable the option. Once it is enabled, all the chats will remain private. To enable temporary chats on an Android smartphone, click on the hamburger icon in the top right corner and select the option.
