If like any other person in India, you have noticed a rise in spam calls of late, there might be a way to fight them now. Truecaller, the popular caller ID and spam-blocking app, has launched its AI-based call screening feature in India. The feature, which was first introduced in September 2022 in select countries, allows users to let an AI assistant answer and transcribe incoming calls for them. The Truecaller Assistant uses speech-to-text technology and natural language processing to interact with callers and display real-time details about the call on the user's screen. It can answer and converse with the caller using its smart algorithm and show you the transcription on your screen. You can also guide the assistant with quick taps on predefined responses. When you are busy, you can set up your own personalised greetings for the assistant to use. You can choose from different voices and languages for the assistant, including over 100 options like Hindi and other regional languages. The call screening feature is aimed at helping users avoid spam calls and save time by knowing the caller's intent and purpose before picking up the phone. Truecaller also says that the feature will enhance the user's security and privacy. The feature is currently available only for Android users in India, and can be used for free for 14 days. After that, users will have to subscribe to the Truecaller Premium Assistant plan, which costs Rs 99 for the first month and Rs 149 per month thereafter. There is no word on when the feature will be rolled out to iOS users. You can access AI call screening right from the bottom navigation bar - there's a new button marked 'Assistant' from where it can be enabled.
