Microsoft to replace Xbox Live Gold subscription with Game Pass Core

Compared to Xbox Live Gold which offers two games every month, Game Pass Core will let players enjoy over 25 titles at the same price.

For years, Microsoft’s Xbox Live Gold subscription has been the go-to subscription for many Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One owners. However, that is soon going to change, with Microsoft announcing it will discontinue Xbox Live Gold in favour of a new plan called ‘Game Pass Core’.

In a blog post yesterday, the tech giant said that from September 14 onwards, Xbox Live Gold will be renamed to Game Pass Core, which comes with a collection of 25 games which will be updated two to three times every year. Compared to the current plan, which offers two games a month, this is a step forward in the right direction.

Microsoft has confirmed that existing Xbox Live Gold members will automatically have their subscription moved to Game Pass Core and that it plans to bid farewell to ‘Games with Gold’ on September 1.

This means only Xbox 360 games which have been downloaded from the service will be free. However, you will need an active Game Pass Core or Ultimate subscription if you want to keep playing Xbox One games that were downloaded from Gold but downloaded Xbox 360 titles will be available regardless of the subscription status.

The list of games which will be available at launch includes Among Us, Descenders, Dishonored 2, Doom Eternal, Fable Anniversary, Fallout 4, Fallout 76, Forza Horizon 4, Gears 5, Grounded, Halo 5: Guardians, Halo Wars 2, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, Human Fall Flat, Inside, Ori and The Will of the Wisps, Psychonauts 2, State of Decay 2, and The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited.

Similar to Xbox Live Gold, the upcoming plan dubbed ‘Game Pass Core’ will be available at a monthly fee of Rs 349.
