Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the latest installment in Ubisoft’s multi-million dollar franchise has surpassed 2 million players in a time span of just 48 hours, making it the company’s one of the biggest launches of all time.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Ubisoft said “Assassin’s Creed Shadows has now surpassed the launches of AC Origins and Odyssey”. This includes players across all platforms like Ubisoft Plus, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

And while it is currently holding the top spot on Steam’s top-selling games list, the gaming studio is yet to share the number of copies it has sold. The sales figures are particularly important as it will determine if Assassin’s Creed Shadows is a commercial success.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows – the 14th installment in Ubisoft’s most popular franchise of all time is set in 16th century Japan. Unlike previous games, Shadows has two protagonists: Fujibayashi Naoe, a female shinobi, and Yasuke, an African samurai inspired by a real figure by the same name. These characters also have different gameplay style, which allows the players to approach quests in various ways.

For those wondering, Ubisoft has been financially struggling for quite some time now. Last year, Star Wars Outlaws, which the company spent a lot of money on, turned out to be a sales failure. In the last few months, rumour had that the Guillemot family, which founded Ubisoft was reportedly in talks with the Chinese gaming giant Tencent for a buyout deal.
