IFA 2024: Intel launches Core Ultra 200V; X86 chips that surpass performance and efficiency of ARM chips for laptops

Intel unveils 2nd-gen AI processors: Core Ultra 200V series to power 80+ laptops with up to 3x performance boost, 20-hour battery, and enhanced AI capabilities.

On Tuesday, Intel officially unveiled its second generation of AI processors — the Intel Core Ultra 200V series — just a few days ahead of the Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA) exhibition. The company calls these Lunar Lake chips (code name) the most efficient family of x86 processors ever, which were first teased earlier this year at Computex in Taiwan. These processors will power more than 80 different Windows laptops from brands like Acer, ASUS, Dell Technologies, HP, Lenovo, LG, MSI, and Samsung, which will be available for pre-order starting today and will go on sale from September 24 in select markets.

Laptops powered by the Intel Core Ultra 200V series of processors will receive Copilot+ PC AI features starting in November.

“Intel’s newest Core Ultra processors set the industry standard for mobile AI and graphics performance, and smash misconceptions about x86 efficiency. Only Intel has the scale through our partnerships with ISVs and OEMs, and the broader technology ecosystem, to provide consumers with a no-compromise AI PC experience,” said Michelle Johnston Holthaus, Intel executive vice president and general manager of the Client Computing Group.

Compared to the Intel Core Ultra 100 series of processors, the latest generation of AI laptop chips from Intel have up to 50 per cent lower package power and up to 120 total platform TOPS (CPU+GPU+ NPU) that enable more than 300 AI-accelerated features.

The new CPU core cluster on the Intel Core Ultra 200V series consists of four performance cores (P-core) optimized for performance per power per area and four low-powered efficient cores (E-cores). It also includes an integrated Intel Arc GPU, powered by the Xe 2 graphics microarchitecture, which can support up to three 4k monitors and deliver best-in-class gaming performance.

Intel has unveiled a total of nine new Core Ultra 200V series processors with the Intel Core Ultra 9 processor 288V being the flagship model with up to 5.1 GHz clock speed and 32 GB of embedded RAM. As laptops equipped with Core Ultra 200V series do not support memory (RAM) expansion, these chips will offer at least 16 GB of RAM.

Intel also claims that laptops equipped with the Core Ultra 200V processor can deliver up to 3x the performance per thread and up to 80 per cent peak performance uplift along with up to 20 hours of battery life in productivity use cases. Coming to power efficiency, Core Ultra 9 2988V is faster than AMD Ryzen HX 370, Snapdragon X Elite X1E-78100, and even the Apple M3, while consuming less power.

Similarly, The Xe2 graphics on the Core Ultra 200V chip can deliver 16 per cent more FPS while gaming when compared to the AMD Ryzen HX 370 and 68 per cent more performance when compared to Snapdragon X Elite X1E-78100, where, it even said that over 28 games didn’t even open on the Snapdragon X Elite powered machines.

Intel has also announced the Evo edition of the Core Ultra 200V series of processors to deliver a refined laptop usage experience such as cooler, quieter performance and responsiveness with instant-on and authentication in 1.5 seconds or less, longer battery life of 20 hours of local video playback or 11 hours of real-world battery life, built-in security features, Wi-Fi 7 connectivity, Thunderbolt Share support, instant wake and fast charging capabilities to ensure 4.5 or more hours of battery life from a 30-minute charge.
