Microsoft will soon introduce AI-powered super-resolution upscaling technology to Windows 11 to enhance the gaming performance of select titles. Currently available in the Windows 11 24H2 Insider build, the company will allow users to enable native AI upscaling features on PCs running Windows 11. First spotted by PhantomOcean3, the upcoming feature on Windows 11 is hidden well inside the graphics settings menu, and Microsoft calls it "Auto-SR," or auto super-resolution, which can either be enabled for specific apps/games or for the entire system. Big graphics card manufacturers have their own custom AI upscaling technologies that significantly improve the fps and graphics quality of AAA titles. Unlike those solutions, Microsoft's AI upscaling is not just limited to gaming; it can also be applied to media players, video conference apps, browsers, and even to older games which do not support AMD's FSR or NVIDIA's DLSS. Right now, the feature is said to be limited to PCs with NVIDIA RTX graphics cards (20 series or newer), and it is also said to be compatible with an NPU. Hence, this feature will also work on laptops powered by the latest Intel Core Ultra processor. Microsoft is likely to release the Windows 11 24H2 update in the second half of 2024, which is also expected to be the last major Windows 11 update. It is expected to introduce a host of new features, including several new on-device AI capabilities that make use of the latest chips from AMD, Intel, and Qualcomm with a dedicated AI processing unit.
