Apple Support has responded to a Twitter user’s claim that his iPhone X “got hot and exploded in the process of upgrading to 12.1 IOS”. Rocky Mohamadali (@rocky_mohamad) also posted photos of what seemed like a damaged iPhone X. “That’s definitely not expected behavior. DM us, so we can look into this with you,” Apple Support replied, a standard response to most queries raised on the platform.

According to Gadgets 360, which reached out to the user, Mohamadali claimed he had plugged in his 10-month old iPhone X for charging while it was updating to iOS 21.1. However, the phone apparently started emitting a dark grey smoke after it turned on post completion of the update. The user claimed the smoke was followed by a fire.

However, there was some confusion over where the user is located as while he claimed the incident took place in the city of Federal Way in Washington, his Twitter bio showed his location as Syria.

Mohamadali was further quoted as saying that he used the official Apple Lightning cable as well as wall adapter that came bundled with his phone for charging it. So far there have been no reports of an iPhone X exploding either while charging or due to any other reason.

Indianexpress.com has not been able to independently verify the user’s claim of the iPhone X exploding. We have also reached out to Apple for a comment, though the company is yet to issue a statement.

Phones can explode due to a variety of reasons from water exposure to battery damage. It is not clear what has happened in this case. Apple iPhone X is the company’s tenth-anniversary edition phone that was launched last September.
