As the India-Pakistan cricket match was making waves on Twitter on Sunday, there was one hashtag that was creating history – #जयहिन्द. Yes that’s right. It was the first ever non-English hashtag trending at the top of the micro-blogging website.
Soon after India won the match by 76 runs, many, including the BCCI, posted congratulatory tweets using the hashtag.
After Hindi, Twitter has now rolled out hashtags in all Devanagari script-based languages including Bengali, Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Oriya and Assamese.
On Tuesday, #தமிழ்வாழ்க , a Tamil word for #LongLiveTamil was at the top of trends too.
The hashtag got many public personalities excited on Twitter including actor Dhanush and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi.
