Snapchat is rolling out a new feature called “Footsteps” that tracks your location history and shows the places you have explored or travelled to on Snap Map. According to Techcrunch, the company confirmed that Footsteps, which was previously limited to Snapchat+ subscribers will soon be available for all iPhone users. When you use Footsteps for the first time, your steps will be based on the Snaps stored in your Memories, meaning all your past trips will be counted as well. However, Snapchat won’t be using your memories after that but instead resort to your location data. Snapchat’s Footsteps feature will not only show the countries you have travelled to but also log how much of an area you have travelled. The company says these percentages are based on where you took Snaps, which means they will only be accurate if you use the app extensively. The company says that your Footsteps are only visible to you and that the feature can be turned off by turning off the “Save new Footsteps as my location updates on the map” toggle under “Map” tab under “Account Actions” in the app settings. Users can also clear their location history using the “Clear Footsteps History” option. Apart from tracking your location, using Footsteps will also let you share a custom sticker with your friends. Another thing to note here is that Footsteps won’t work if you have turned on Ghost Mode, an in-app setting that prevents the app from sharing your location with your friends. While Snapchat did not specify any timeline, the company did say that the feature will be available for Android users in the near future. Earlier this month, Snapchat announced a bunch of new features at it's 2024 Partner Summit which includes the ability to switch between public and private profiles, an AI powered lens feature that lets users see the future version of themselves and more.
