WhatsApp, the popular instant messaging platform used by billions worldwide is working on bringing a new feature that allows users to set an AI-generated image as their profile picture.

Available as part of the latest WhatsApp beta for Android v2.24.11.17, the new feature was first reported by WABetaInfo and is really handy if someone does not want to set their photo as a profile picture, thus increasing user privacy.

According to the report, the tool is speculated to show up when users click on the pencil-like edit tab in the profile picture settings, but WhatsApp may give it an Avatar-like treatment and place it in a dedicated tab.

As can be seen in the image above, the AI-powered profile picture generator will more or less look like stickers and might allow you to generate an image the way you want to by typing a description. This means you will be able to create unique and personalised images that describe your current mood, personality or interests.

While it is still unknown what large language model the AI-powered functionality will use, WABetaInfo speculates that it will be the same the platform used for the recently introduced Meta AI search bar. As it turns out, the functionality is currently under development and there is no word on when it will be available to all.

Earlier this month, WhatsApp unveiled a new feature that prevents users from taking screenshots of other’s profile pictures. WhatsApp has rolled out several new features in the last few weeks like a redesigned voice call UI, pinning multiple messages in chat and Face ID and Touch ID-powered passwordless login.
