Apple Maps, the navigation service that competes against Google Maps is now available on the web. Launched in 2012, Apple Maps was previously limited to Apple devices and offers a plethora of features like walking and driving directions in addition to view ratings and reviews. Currently available in beta, you can now use Apple Maps by simply heading over to "beta.maps.Apple.com" from your favourite browser. Similar to the iOS version, you can check out view guides, explore cities, get information about businesses and even order food. However, some features like Look Around will be available in the coming months. Apple says that Maps on the web is currently available in English and works with Safari and Chrome on Mac and iPad while Windows users are limited to Chrome and Microsoft Edge. We tried using the service on the mobile version of Chrome, Edge and Vivaldi, but the website shows an error message saying "Your current browser isnt supported." Apple says it is planning to roll out support for other languages, browsers and platforms in the future, but there is no information on when it will be available. Since its debut in 2012, Apple has been adding new features like detailed city maps, multi-shop routing, cycling directions, EV routing, offline navigation and more to its navigation service. However, some places like "The Indian Express" building are mislabeled as a "Copy shop". It also got the name of the road wrong, hinting that the navigation service still has a long way to go before it can be used as an alternative to Google Maps. Previously, Apple Maps were only available via developers who used the API to make maps for sites like DuckDuckGo. While Google Maps remains one of the most popular navigation services in India, apps like MapMyIndia's Mappls, Sygic, Waze and others have cropped up as viable alternatives. Recently, Microsoft, Meta and Amazon's open-source mapping project also released its first public dataset, giving mapping developers free access to 2.3 billion unique buildings, 54 million places of interest and over 200 million addresses.
