Ads are coming to Apple Maps, according to a Bloomberg report published on Sunday. As part of Apple’s ongoing effort to boost its services revenue, the company will allow business owners to promote their locations within the app, similar to Google Maps.

This decision follows an all-hands meeting at Apple, where the board agreed to “explore” the idea of introducing ads on Apple Maps. This isn’t the first time Apple has considered ads on its Maps platform; discussions date back to 2022. Ads were initially expected to arrive by 2023 but were delayed for unknown reasons, claims Bloomberg.

The report also suggests that ad implementation on Apple Maps could be similar to Google Maps, where business owners can pay Apple to stand out in search results—likely with a disclosure banner stating “Sponsored,” similar to the App Store.

As revenue from hardware sales stagnates, Apple is increasingly investing in its services to drive subscription revenue. In fact, a report from Apple Insider suggests that Apple has generated over $10 billion in revenue from its services alone.

These efforts include the expansion of apps like Apple TV, Apple Music, and Apple Music Classical to Android smartphones. In the coming days, Apple is expected to bring more of its first-party apps to additional platforms while introducing new revenue streams, including ads and other monetisation strategies.
