Apple announced OS X El Capitan at the annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) and this is the new OS that will power its iMacs, MacBooks, Mac Pro. With OS X El Capitan, Apple has put the focus on performance and experience. We take a quick look at the key features of OS X El Capitan. Metal: OS X El Capitan comes with Apple's graphics technology named Metal. According to Apple, this will accelerate Core Animation and Core Graphics to boost system-level rendering by up to 50 per cent and efficiency by up to 40 per cent. Metal also delivers up to 10 times faster draw call performance, says Apple. [related-post] Spotlight: Spotlight will now show results for more topics such as weather, stocks, sports, transit and web video. You can now resize the Spotlight window. Also like in Siri in iOS 9, users can rely on 'natural language' to find search results in the desktop with Spotlight. Sadly Siri is not available with OS X El Capitan. Notes app: Like with iOS 9, the Notes app has been updated. In El Capitan, users can drag photos, PDFs, videos and other files into notes, and add content directly from other apps, such as Safari or Maps. Checklists can also be created on Notes app. Mission Control and Split-view: Mission Control has been re-designed as well with a cleaner interface. When the desktop gets crowded, users can simply drag a window to the top of their screen to access the new Spaces Bar in Mission Control and create a new Space, which is OS X's way of grouping applications. There is also a new Split-View feature that automatically positions two app windows side-by-side in full screen. Safari: Safari now has "pinned sites" where you can add your favourite websites and these will be kept open and active in the tab bar. Additionally a mute button will silence browser audio from any tab. Mail: Mail app in OS X El Capitan comes with smart Suggestions, which recognises names or events in a Mail message and prompts a user to add them to their contacts or calendar with a single click. Users can also swipe to delete messages, just like in iOS. Photos: Photos App will now support third-party editing extensions. Users will have to download them from the Mac Store. New font: San Francisco is the new system font on Apple OS X El Capitan, which is the same font used in Apple Watch. El Capitan also features enhanced international language support, including a new Chinese system font for both Traditional and Simplified. When will OS X El Capitan release? The developer preview of OS X El Capitan has gone live. Mac users can participate in the El Capitan Beta Program in July and download the final version for free from the Mac App Store this fall when the new iPhones are released. Customers can sign up for public beta here: www.apple.com With OS X El Capitan, Apple hasn't offered a new host of new features and instead focused on efficiency of performance and UI improvements. The most notable changes are to the Notes App, Safari and to the Spotlight. How Metal transforms graphics experience on OS X El Capitan, will of course defend on how old or new your MacBook or iMac is. Whether Apple includes more features when the final build is rolled-out, remains to be seen. Read more: Apple iOS 9: Can ‘Proactive’ Siri challenge Google Now?
