Apple WWDC 5 big announcements: iOS 9, Apple Music, OS X El Capitan and more

Apple’s WWDC 2015 is over for the year and the tech-giant has showcased iOS 9, OS X El Capitan, the new WatchOS and unveiled a new Music Streaming service. We take a look at the biggest announcements from WWDC 2015.

iOS 9

iOS 9 is the new OS for Apple’s iPhones, iPads and iPod Touch devices.  The biggest change is to Siri, which now has proactive assistance as well that will provide context-based information, similar to what Google Now does. Proactive assistance in iOS 9 will ensure that your reminders, events are added to your calendar automatically, you are shown relevant information based on your search, habits, etc.

In addition to this there is a News app (restricted to US, UK and Australia) a redefined Notes App along with Passbook getting revamped as Wallet. Apple Pay will now include loyalty cards from various merchants as well and soon users will be able to buy ‘pins’ from Pinterest.

Apple Maps is getting a new Transit feature which will provide information on local trains, bus services, subways etc. iPads will get Split-view in iOS 9, though anyone with an iPad 4 and older will not get the feature. Apple is also promising better battery optimisation and better security for Apple ID with two-factor authentication.

OS X El Capitan 

OS X El Capitan is the new software for Macs and Apple has focussed on efficiency and UI changes rather than adding too many new features.

OS X El Capitan comes with Apple’s graphics technology named Metal which Apple boost graphic performance by 50 per cent. In addition, Spotlight will show results for more topics such as weather, stocks, sports, transit and web video. The Note app has also been revamped to include photos, PDFs, videos and other files.

Split-view comes to Macs as well and Apple has re-designed Mission Control with a cleaner interface. For all the features of OS X El Capitan, click here.

WatchOS 2.0

Apple’s new watchOS 2.0 will give greater freedom to developers to create ‘native apps’ for Apple Watch. The advantage of this is that Apple Watch get more apps that won’t always rely the iPhone.  Developers will be able to move the app logic to the Apple Watch itself with watchOS 2.

Also Apple is granting them access to microphone, speakers, Native HealthKit, accelerometer and the Taptic engine in the watch.

In addition to this a new Timepiece function lets users choose from a picture as the background for Apple Watch. Complications will let users choose from a variety of information they want reflected on the Apple Watch home-screen. There’s also a Time Travel mode which lets users go forward and backwards by up to 72 hours in the Apple Watch.

Also now when Apple Watch is on its side and charging, it will automatically go into Nightstand mode.  WatchOS 2 is available for developers and the final roll-out to the public will be in fall 2015.

Apple Music

Apple Music is the company’s $9.99 per month music streaming service that includes the 24×7 live Beats radio station. Apple’s Music streaming service will showcase content from upcoming artists, even artists that have not been signed by big labels. The best part is that Apple’s Music service will be available in over 100 countries so its likely that India will be on the list.

Apple Music membership will be the same for whichever Apple device you use and Apple is also planning to bring the service to Android as well. For more details, click here.

Swift

Swift is Apple’s programming language for writing apps for iOS and OS X. In a major announcement at WWDC 2015, Apple announced that Swift will be an open-source language and that it will provide the compilers and libraries for Linux as well. Swift will go open-source by late 2015.
