The Mobile World Congress show in Barcelona is always full of wild, futuristic concepts for phones and other mobile gadgets. This year’s lineup didn’t disappoint, with bendy wearables, holographic lenses, and more. Let’s check out some of the coolest ideas.
Lenovo unveiled a laptop concept straight out of a sci-fi movie – the world’s first transparent laptop. The 17.3″ ThinkBook Transparent has a see-through screen and keyboard area for a futuristic, borderless look.
The MicroLED display offers 55% transparency when pixels are off. And while not as crisp as AMOLED, the screen’s 1,000 nit peak brightness and 720p resolution still make visuals pop. Beyond the transparent design, details are slim on hardware specs and real-world functionality.
Leave it to Motorola to come up with something totally wacky and creative. Their latest concept is a smartphone that can literally bend around your wrist as a bracelet when not in use. Just slip it off your arm, unfold it, and bam – you’ve got a regular smartphone in your hand.
We’re not sure how practical this thing would be in real life, but it’s definitely unique. Sadly it’s just an idea for now, but we applaud Motorola for thinking outside the box.
Samsung is also getting in on the wearable phone action. Their OLED Cling Band concept uses a flexible display that can wrap entirely around your wrist, converting your smartphone into a fitness band/smartwatch hybrid.
With its unique segmented display, the phone can bend into a perfect bracelet shape when not in use. Then when you need your phone, just unwrap the display from your wrist and you’ve got a full 6.9″ screen in hand. This 2-in-1 phone and wearable design is ideal for fitness buffs who want their phone and activity tracking on one device.
The Dynamic 1 by Tecno is designed to mimic real dog behaviors like head cocking, play bows, and tail wagging. This robotic companion can even dance and do gymnastic flips.
Controlled by a smartphone app, the Dynamic 1 is modeled after a German Shepherd dog but with some obvious robotic twists. It can’t fetch your slippers or lick your face, but this bot dog is still tons of fun.
What if your phone could book you a ride or restaurant reservation without needing to open any apps? That’s the concept behind T-Mobile’s AI Phone prototype. Instead of a screen full of apps, it has an AI assistant that aims to understand your goals and take actions for you.
Powered by Brain.ai, the phone’s AI interface is designed to replace specific apps by predicting what you want to accomplish and then generating the steps to make it happen. Tell it you want to plan a vacation and it’ll supposedly book flights, hotels, rental cars, etc without you needing to tap through multiple apps yourself.
Xpanceo has developed a prototype augmented reality contact lens with a built-in holographic display. It projects images directly into your field of vision without the need for bulky AR headsets.
The company used a unique lens testing system to demonstrate the holographic AR capabilities for sports stats, navigation, and more. Of course, the tech is still a long way from consumer viability, but it offers a peek at a radical AR future where info is beamed right onto our eyeballs.
