Seagate has announced new 2TB HDD with an areal density of 7mm. This new HDD will help OEMs design devices that are light-weight, fast and more power-efficient.

This new design is an industry first and Seagate’s engineers were able to boost areal density to 1TB per platter. The new drive will weigh just 3.17 oz and Seagate claims it to be 25 percent lighter than the previous generation mobile hard drive products.

“Combining new mechanical firmware architectures, with state of the art heads, media and electronic design, this technology is a real game changer- providing four times more capacity than a 0.25TB SSD at a substantially lower cost,” said Mark Re, Chief Technology Officer, Seagate.

Seagate claims that the new 2TB HDD can store more than 5,00,000 songs or up to 3,20,000 photos or 26 hours of 4K UHD content. The new HDD is based on 2.5-inch form factor and Seagate is examining a hybrid format by combining NAND flash with proprietary learning algorithms, that can deliver better performance and richer consumer experience and yet keeping the cost low.
