At the Google I/O 2024, the tech giant announced that it will soon bring Gemini to Gmail and other Google Workspace apps like Docs, Sheets and Drive. As it turns out, the company is now rolling out the Gemini sidebar for Gmail users.
In a blog post, Google says the Gemini sidebar for Gmail can help summarise emails, help draft new emails, suggest responses to a thread, ask questions and find information from emails or files stored on Google Drive. In addition to these functionalities, users can also ask questions like “What was the PO number for my agency?” or “When is the next team meeting?”. However, mobile-exclusive features like Contextual Smart Reply and Gmail Q&A still seem to be on their way.
The tech giant says these functionalities will “leverage Google’s most capable models, including the Gemini 1.5 Pro model” and are rolling out for those part of the Google Workspace Rapid Release program. For those on the Standard Release, the rollout will start on July 8 and take up to 15 days to complete.
If you are a free Gmail user or have a Google One Premium subscription, the features won’t be available anytime soon as they are limited to Google One AI Premium subscribers, Gemini Business or Enterprise add-on or Gemini Education or Education Premium add-on.
Last week, Google made the Gemini app available in India for Android with support for nine Indian languages like Hindi, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu. For iOS users, Gemini is now available as part of the Google app.
