Instagram users who are not happy with what they see in their recommendations will soon be able to hit the reset button.

The Meta-owned social media platform is letting users start fresh by clearing the recommended content shown to them across Explore, Reels, and Feed sections of the app.

“Your recommendations will start to personalise again over time, showing new content based on the content and accounts you interact with,” Meta said in a blog post published on Tuesday, November 19.

How to use Instagram’s new reset feature

“Sometimes you might end up in a pattern where you just make Instagram unintentionally into something that you do not love. Explore, for instance, can be really tippy. I have looked at some old soccer highlights and all of a sudden Explore is all soccer highlights and I didn’t love it anymore,” Instagram head Adam Mosseri said while announcing the feature.

In order to reset content recommendations:

– Open the Instagram app
– Go to Settings > Content Preferences
– Then click on ‘Reset Suggested Content’

While resetting, users will be able to see the accounts they are following so that they can unfollow any account that is sharing content they do not want to see anymore.

However, Mosseri also cautioned users against doing it all the time as resetting recommendations is a “big thing to do” that will make Instagram less interesting at first as the app will not know anything about the user’s interests and will take some time to re-learn them.

Instagram features that are already available

Instagram has existing features for users who want to tell the platform what content they are interested or not interested in.

If a user likes a post or Reel they see in their Explore page, they can click on the three dots in the top-right corner of the post and select ‘Interested’. Users can also select ‘Not Interested’ on the same three-dot menu.

Instagram users can further avoid seeing certain types of content using the platform’s Hidden Words feature.
