Apple on Wednesday announced the first public beta of iOS 17 which was announced in June. The latest update enables tech-savvy users to get a glimpse of the next iteration of iOS ahead of its official launch in September 2023. Users can now install iOS 17 public beta on an eligible iPhone for free to experience all the latest features of Apple iOS.

Before we go any further, it needs to be noted that installing a beta build could affect the core functionalities of your iPhone. Also, rolling back to the stable build would take some workaround. Hence, it is not advisable to install the iOS 17 beta build on their primary device.

In case you have made up your mind to test the iOS 17 public beta, then here we list some of its prominent features.

Phone and messages

iOS 17 introduces a brand new phone app. The headline feature of the new phone app is the Contact Poster, which allows users to further customise the contact with full-screen-sized wallpaper and custom fonts. In select markets, iOS 17 also introduces features like live voicemail and silence unknown callers for added privacy.

Similarly, the Messages app now allows users to create custom stickers, and the company has also tweaked the UI to make it even more accessible. Besides, users can now share live data from an ongoing trip via the Check-In feature, which includes useful information like battery data, live location, estimated time of arrival, and more. When there is a significant delay or the user is not responding, the iPhone will automatically share critical user information to keep them informed.

FaceTime

FaceTime also gets an abundance of new features with the iOS 17 update. Some of the prominent new additions to FaceTime are video and audio messages where a user can send a video or audio message when someone misses a call.

Similarly, the new FaceTime reaction uses the Face ID hardware to add 3D effects to video calls and with Continuity Camera technology, FaceTime calls can now be accessed on large screen devices like televisions plugged into an Apple TV 4K with tvOS 17.

StandBy mode

StandBy mode is easily one of the best implementations of always-on-display, which is now available for a variety of iPhones, and it works the best on iPhone 13 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro series with their LTPO display technology. StandBy mode transforms an iPhone into a digital desk clock or photo album, and it can even show notifications from apps and services, without revealing confidential information.

Apple’s implementation of StandBy mode is pretty genius, where it only activates when you put your iPhone to charge, hence, it will not have any effect on your iPhone’s battery life whatsoever. StandBy mode even has a night mode, which presents content in the red tint to reduce eye strain.

Interactive widgets

Widgets have been a part of the iPhone for the last few years, and with iOS 17, Apple supercharged widgets, where users can now control and interact with a service without actually opening the app. This includes controlling smart home devices, checking off a task, and a lot more.

Interactive widgets are not just limited to first-party apps, even third-party app developers can make use of the new widget API to design and develop customisable and interactive widgets for third-party apps and services.

AirDrop gets NameDrop

NameDrop is an implementation of AirDrop, which allows users to quickly share their contact with a nearby iPhone or Apple Watch. Proximity sharing is a feature, which quickly detects a nearby Apple device using Bluetooth, enabling users to share contacts, pictures, videos, and documents.

Similarly, in the upcoming version of iOS 17, users will be able to continue to share their files with the help of the cloud with the help of the Internet Transfer feature, which is an ideal way of sharing large-sized files with friends and family. Depending on the file size, one might have to get an Apple iCloud+ subscription to use this feature.
