Apple iPhones are known to offer more security and privacy than their Android counterparts, but as it turns out, iOS devices are more prone to phishing attacks. According to a new report by researchers at the Lookout Threat Lab, around 19 per cent of enterprise iOS devices were exposed to at least one mobile phishing attack while only 10.9 per cent of Android devices faced similar threats.

Researchers said that they used AI-powered mobile data of around 220 million devices and 360 million apps alongside “billion of web items” for their Q3 2024 Mobile Threat Landscape Report

One of the main reasons why iPhone users are at greater risk is because of the popularity of iOS in workplaces. Lookout said that across its customer base, there are more than two times the number of iOS devices compared to Android-powered ones. For those wondering, these phishing attacks are designed to steal sensitive information like usernames, passwords, card details, personal data and more.

The report also suggests that 31.1 per cent of these attacks were successful because of the date iOS version while 12.3 per cent of attacks were due to out-of-date Android Security Patch Levels (ASPLs). Since 2019, Lookout says it has identified more than 473 million malicious websites and blocked around 13,659,000 offensive content sites in the third quarter of 2024.

While there is no sure-fire way to stay safe from phishing attacks and mobile malware, staying vigilant is the only way to prevent such attacks.
