Lumia 950, Lumia 950 XL, Surface 4: All that is expected from Microsoft event

While Lumia 950, 950 XL are a given, Microsoft is also expected to showcase refinements to the operating system and new devices running the OS at its event today

Microsoft is hosting its first major Windows 10 event at New York today. where it will likely to show its own hardware, which will act as reference design for OEMs and also detail what’s in store for Windows 10 in coming months. And yes, two new Lumia phones, the 950 and 950 XL are also expected.

So far, Microsoft says that Windows 10 has been installed on 75 million devices.

Microsoft is all set to announce two new Lumia flagship smartphones at the event. These two devices will be the torch-bearers for Microsoft’s Windows 10 mobile.

The Lumia 950 will feature a 5.2-inch display while Lumia 950XL will come with a larger 5.7-inch display. Both the devices will sport a WQHD (1440×2560) OLED display which could be based on Nokia’s ClearBlack technology. Under the hood, Lumia 950 will be powered by a hexacore Snapdragon 808 processor while Lumia 950XL gets more powerful Snapdragon 810 processor.

Like every other Lumia before, both the new Lumia’s will feature a 20MP pureview image sensor with f/1.9 aperture. The handsets will come with 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage. Lumia 950 gets a 3000mAh battery and Lumia 950XL goes for 3300mAh battery. Both the model will support wireless charging and support USB Type-C port.

While there is not much clarity on the Surface Pro 4, Microsoft had earlier said that the design won’t change much from its predecessors and all the existing accessories will be supported. In all likelihood, Surface Pro 4 will get similar 12-inch display but the resolution may be bumped up to 4K. Also the device is expected to get Intel’s Skylake processors and will be thinner and lighter that its predecessor.

While its a Windows 10 event, Microsoft is also expected to display the second generation of its fitness Band. Microsoft Band 2 will feature curved display and metal accent around the curved display.

Microsoft showstopper will Windows 10. Apart from the devices, Windows 10 will get its own share of details. Windows 10 Insiders on the fast ring are currently running build 10547 and Microsoft may well demo threshold 2 update.

The threshold 2 update is expected to rollout in November with support for enterprise data protection, a Windows Store for business users to bring their own apps and more clarity on Win32 apps and .Net apps coming to Windows Store. With Skype now integrated into most Microsoft products, we can expect to see new Skype messaging and video apps.

Long-time Microsoft watcher, Mary Jo Foley writes there is uncertainty around Microsoft’s ApplePay alternative codenamed OnePay.

Surprise in store:

Along with Surface Pro 4, rumours indicate that there is another Surface device in the offering with 14-inch screen. This could be a full-fledged ultrabook aimed at business users.

Along with flagship Lumia 950 and Lumia 950XL, Microsoft may also show its budget Lumia 550 running Windows 10 mobile at the event.

Google and Microsoft recently agreed to bury all their patent infringement cases and collaborate on certain patent matters. There is now speculations that Google will announce its Windows 10 apps at the event today.

While its clear that Xbox One is not getting Windows 10 core elements anytime soon, Microsoft could make use of the opportunity to demonstrate the Windows Store and Cortana integration. Microsoft could also demo new enhancements to its augmented reality headset HoloLens which shares core Windows 10 elements.
