Opera has for years been crunching data on browsers for users. Now it is bringing the same technology to your entire smartphone with the Opera Max, a free data-management & data-saving app. Launched in India and Bangladesh on Tuesday, the app can be downloaded from the Google Play store.
Opera Max claims to shrink videos and photos across most apps on mobile data and Wi-Fi, thus reducing the data usage.

We have been trying the app for a few days and while it managed to save data, the savings were not all that significant. However, by the end of the month this could make all the difference for someone who is on a limited data plan.
The app gives daily as well as monthly data statistics. And you can also see how much data has been saved in which apps. This is also a good way of figuring out which are the apps draining your data.
Though the data is saved by compressing videos, photos, media and more for almost all apps and websites, this does not seem to affect the quality of the same on the apps.
Since there is less data to load, Opera claims pages too load faster. And that seems to be a valid claim. The app also lets users block a certain app from using data, again very useful for that apps that keep going online on their own.
Opera claims the app can can condense a 10 MB video down to 3 MB without any noticeable loss of quality. It does this by rerouting data using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to the data-savings cloud. Opera says it app does not optimise any data sent using these encrypted connections. “A user’s private data is forwarded directly to the desired destination instead of being proxied through the Opera Max savings cloud,” a release said.
Opera Max can be downloaded from the Google Play store today.
