Sony Xperia smartphones are dust and waterproof. This was and still is, well advertised and now well-known to consumers. This was one of reasons many buyers preferred Xperia smartphones, hoping to capture underwater photographs. However, the company's support website seems to be warning its customers about the water-resistant feature of Xperia smartphones by releasing some basic guidelines. Sony is clear about the fact that Xperia smartphones which are labeled as water-proof are completely protected while “singing in the rain and watching movies in the tub” or using it with wet fingers and in dusty environments. But the company has now categorically advised customers “not to use the device underwater.” Also, the support website states, “If you accidentally get the device wet with non-fresh water, wash the device with tap water.” Sony's marketing campaigns never mentioned of such restrictions before. Here is a promo video of one of the Xperia 'waterproof' devices: In its support website, Sony tries to educate consumers about IP ratings elaborately. Surprisingly, the new advisory comes after the recent launch of Z5 series. Before this, Sony had always put a tiny asterisk next to the word waterproof to support its waterproof claims.
