WhatsApp will soon use Meta AI to summarise unread messages: Here’s how it works

WhatsApp, the Meta-owned instant messaging platform with more than a billion users worldwide, is undoubtedly the most popular instant messaging app in the world. Recently, the app developers started testing a new functionality that lets users quickly catch up with unread messages by offering them a summary of chats using Meta AI.
According to a new report by WABetaInfo, the website that keeps track of new and upcoming WhatsApp features, the new functionality is currently available for those on WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.18.18, which is available on the Google Play Store. The report also states that these AI-generated message summaries are designed with privacy in mind, meaning all your messages will remain private and protected and work with both individual and group chats.

As can be seen in the image below, select beta testers can enable Private Processing from the app settings to get AI-generated message summaries. Once enabled, users will be greeted with a dedicated button that will appear when a user gets a certain number of new messages in their conversations.

When users tap the new button, WhatsApp will send a request to the Private Processing system, which will then return a summarised version of unread messages without storing any data.
Like Apple’s Private Cloud Compute, Private Processing is a system which ensures that the data is processed without being sent to WhatsApp or Meta servers. Also, developers say no one, including Meta, can access or read the processed data and that user requests remain anonymous and cannot be linked back to their identity.
Also, the new AI-generated message summary feature is entirely optional, so users who are not comfortable sharing their data can choose to opt out of it.
Apart from message summaries, another AI-powered feature currently in development is Writing Help, which, as the name suggests, allows users to rewrite or rephrase their messages by changing things like tone.
