Over the past couple of years, the smartphone has started dominating music across the world. It is without doubt the most popular source of music wherever you are. People like to listen to songs on the go and the smartphone, or just a feature phone, is there is provide what they want to hear. This is why even large over the ear and on-ear headsets, that earlier used to be yoked only to high-end music systems, are now being made essentially to be used with the smartphone. The Sennheiser Urbanite Denim is one such headphone, made for the the smartphone.

Sennheiser Urbanite Denim

Price: Rs 15,990

As the name suggests, these headphones come with a good dose of denim. So the headband has a denim finish, that might match with what you are wearing. The headband is really soft and you won’t realise it is there, even after long hours of listening. The ear cups fold in, making it really easy to pack into the small satin pouch that comes in the box.

But folding in does not mean that these appear flimsy. In fact, the Urbanite is made with such reassurance that it gives a very solid feeling of durability. The frame is not made of plastic and it does not have any pretence of being so. Even the pin that plugs into the earphone has a locking mechanism that holds it in place, however mobile you become while listening to your music.

How good is the audio quality

The Urbanite is all about bass. But not in a ‘Jhankar beats’ kind of way. This headphone has the kind of depth that makes listening to any percussion instrument a pleasure. But then it is also true for strong instruments. I listened to the ‘Darshana – The Vision Of Fusion’ album on Saavn and the sound reproduction just blew me away. It is that kind of headset, with the right amount of bass.

Just to make sure that what I was hearing was true, I tried a bit of heavy vocals too. I love the song ‘Manmarziyan’ from ‘Lootera’, but I doubt if I have heard it better. And that is a big thing for me to say, because I test almost all the headphones that I review with this song for sure. And I have tested some really awesome headphones of late.

This models is also equipped with a microphone and remote for Android and iOS users. The mic offers great audio quality on both sides. The remote seems to trigger the native music player and didn’t work for streaming apps like Wynk till you click on the app.

What is not that good?
These are not noise cancelling headphones, but the ear cups are tight on your ears and that keeps a lot of the noise out. However, this means there is a fair bit of pressure building up on your ears over a period of time. I did find it a bit irritating in the long run as it can get a bit sweaty in there as the temperature outside soars.

Also, the lock-in mechanism on the cable leads to instances where the pin is not fully in and you are hearing audio in mono. This takes some getting used to.

Should you buy it?

Yes, if you love to hear your music the way it is meant to. These are one of the best headphones I have heard, especially in this price range. The fact that this has a price tag lower than what other top-end Sennheiser headphones have makes the Urbanite more attractive.
