Videocon Krypton3 V50JG quick review

While Videocon might be pitching the 2.5D curved glass design as one its USPs, I didn’t like the overall design much.

As far as competitors go, the Krypton3 V50JG is up against other budget smartphones like Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 3, LeEco Le 2, Meizu m3 note, Lenovo Vibe K4 Note and Coolpad Note 3 Lite. Here is our quick review of the smartphone:

Positives

The smartphone is 4G-ready and comes with Android Marshmallow, which is great. The UI experience is very close to stock Android, which I liked. Plus, Android Marshmallow comes with features like battery optimisation, Google Now on Tap etc, making the overall UI experience pretty decent.

The rear camera isn’t one of the best in the price-range, but manages to do a good job in well-lit places. The results that I got were pretty decent. Not very sharp, but the colours don’t tend to bleed. I, however, struggled with the focus in low-light settings. The front camera isn’t too bad either.

The phone comes with a 6-months free subscription of Eros Now. While, I had access to quite a few movies and songs; the app prompted me to switch to a premium subscription for more. Nevertheless, having free movies and songs on your phone is always a great escape while travelling in a crowded metro.

The battery is 3,000mAh, which should last easily for a day depending on moderate to heavy usage. But let me warn you, the smartphone doesn’t seem to come with a very good quality charger and takes a lot of time (6-7 hours) to charge.

Negatives

Videocon Krypton3 V50JG comes with a 5-inch HD IPS display, which is quite decent. I did not struggle with it in bright sunlight, when I turned the brightness level to maximum. However, if you look at the fact that its direct competitors offer full HD display in this price range, you are in for disappointment on this front.

The smartphone has apparent lags while multitasking, which I didn’t like. The transition between tabs wasn’t smooth and apps took their own time to open most of the times. I wouldn’t advise this device to anyone who likes to play a lot of mobile games.

Videocon Krypton3 V50JG has a plastic back, but with that sort of a metallic royal blue colour and silver metal frames on the sides makes it look like the smartphone has been carved out of a car’s body.

Videocon Krypton3 V50JG lacks a fingerprint scanner, which again is a big minus as almost all phones in this price range offer one nowadays. It’s always better to have the feature in a phone to unlock it quickly.

Verdict

For me, Videocon Krypton3 V50JG didn’t stand out for a lot of things. This isn’t a good value for money device given the cut throat competition in this price segment. Even if we leave Redmi Note 3 out of competition as its costs almost Rs 1,000 more; Krypton3 V50JG still struggles against Lenovo K4 Note (with ANT VR), Meizu m3 note and a much lower priced Coolpad Note 3 Lite.

Frankly, Rs 10,000 is too much a price to pay for Videocon Krypton3 V50JG. I’d still consider buying it if it was priced somewhere between Rs 6,000 to Rs 7,000.
