Social media is the new stage where we all end up performing. Be with ‘witty’ or ‘politically critical’ Facebook posts, ‘chic’ Instagram photos with just the right filter added to them, this is where pretty much everyone, maintains an image these days.
If Instagram is your daily dose of poison, then you know how it works. Standard vacation shots, hiking trips, pictures of stunning skies, coffee and food photos titled as ‘food porn’ are the usual fair. So in steps ‘Socality Barbie’ ready to mock our Instagram lives with an account that is much more fabulous, much more #authentic.
She has photos of everything that are common on Instagram; hiking with full coffee gear, coffee mugs with heart shaped foams, ‘arty’ ice-cream photos, photos of just her legs and feet, and she even mocks the famous ‘Follow me’ Instagram account.
She’s also got the right captions as well. Sample these: ‘I believe in the person I want to become,’ ‘The mountains are calling to me’ ‘We must have adventures to know where we truly belong.’ It’s likely we’ve all read or posted some ‘philosophical captions’ on Instagram at some point, except that since Barbie is saying this, you can’t miss how fake it all sounds.
And yes, Socality Barbie gets it spot on with hashtags too. You can ignore tags like #instaphoto, #humblebrag, #vscocam #adventure, reminding us that hashtag filled photos are now the norm on Instagram.

So who runs Insta-Barbie? According to a Wired post, the account is run by a woman wedding photographer from Portland, Oregon.
While she wishes to remain anonymous, she told Wired that the idea behind the account was to mock people with hashtags like #liveauthentic, when the truth was that these pictures are now all the same.
She told Wired, “I couldn’t tell any of their pictures apart so I thought, ‘What better way to make my point than with a mass-produced doll?'”
Barbie has over 7000 followers on Instagram and you can check out her account here.

The shots by Socality Barbie are all very arty, high-resolution and a reminder of the lives we have all lived or continue to live on Instagram and that #authentic is very hard to find these days.
