Argentina scored a last-minute equalizer against Morocco in their soccer opener at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Although it seemed like the game had ended with the goal, it was actually suspended due to pitch invaders. Journalist Gaston Edul originally shared a video of the chaotic scenes on X, which garnered over a million views. Though the video has since been taken down, the comments still capture the heated discussions it ignited.
One user asked, “Why did the French whistle at us the entire game and send us off with firecrackers? Did we do something to them? Moroccans stop jumping.” Another user added, “Sanction now for Morocco. How can they enter the field with Firecrackers? It’s a danger.” Meanwhile, a third user wrote, “Despite the dramatic end with a last-minute equalizer, the focus should be on the players’ performances and the competitive nature of the match. It’s crucial for fans to respect the game and the players to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone..”
The match, which started at 2pm at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard, saw Morocco take a surprising 2-0 lead with goals from Soufiane Rahimi, one from open play and the second from a penalty. Giuliano Simeone then made it 2-1 for Argentina, setting up the game for an exciting finish.
Moroccan fans were furious when officials added 15 minutes of stoppage time, causing disruptions and chaotic scenes. The video shows Argentine players ducking from a firecracker thrown from the stands. Bottles and plastic cups were also thrown from the stands, and several spectators rushed onto the pitch, prompting the referee to immediately blow the whistle.

Argentina thought they had equalized in the 106th minute in Saint-Etienne when Cristian Medina headed in a rebound. However, the game was thrown into chaos as fans rushed the pitch and Argentine players took cover in the tunnel while firecrackers were thrown at them.
Viewers thought the match had ended 2-2, but it wasn’t over. Even though 15 minutes of added time was scheduled, the players were taken off the field with three minutes still to play.
Over an hour later, VAR ruled out Medina’s goal for offside. So, after the stadium cleared, both teams came back to play the last few minutes, with Morocco still leading 2-1. The players warmed up on the pitch at Saint-Etienne and resumed play at 6pm in the empty stadium. Morocco held on for the last three minutes to win 2-1.
