Removing the divide: Man shares post on how having dinner with his maid changed him

Shanti posted the overwhelming experience on his Facebook page.

Indian mentality hasn’t changed much over the years when it comes to household maids. Many of us still have separate utensils for our maids, they are often expected to sit on the floor, instead of at the same level as their employers. However, Pune-based spiritual teacher Nithya Shanti’s mother did something wonderful, which is an inspiration for many.

She invited her maid’s family for dinner and they all sat together for dinner.

Nithya Shanti’s Facebook page

Shanti posted the overwhelming experience on his Facebook page and going by the number of shares and likes, the gesture has gotten widespread applause. In his post, he shares how the entire experience of hosting the dinner taught him so much about his maid’s life, about her children who toil day and night to pay the loan the family had taken for their house, how she travels long hours to reach work without personal conveyance, how her son’s aptitude for computer is not enough, and he needs money (that’s lacking) to hone it as well.

Shanti has also started a crowd-funding campaign to help the maid pay the loan for her house.
