(a) FYI: Wildlife Sanctuary State Tansa Wildlife Sanctuary Maharashtra Gandhisagar Wildlife Sanctuary Madhya Pradesh Satkosia Wildlife Sanctuary Odisha Barda Wildlife Sanctuary Gujarat Therefore option (a) is the correct answer. Source: (wii.gov.in) 2. (b) FYI: — Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) comprises more than 100 viruses worldwide, of which at least 14 cause cancer. HPV 16 and 18 are responsible for about 70 per cent of the global disease burden. It is the most common sexually transmitted infection. — The higher rates of cervical cancer incidence and mortality in India are not attributable to differences in cervical infection with HPV types. Instead, they are because of the absence of the HPV vaccination programme, the relative lack of high-quality cervical cancer screening and the lack of access to cervical cancer treatment. — Cervarix and Gardasil are the currently available HPV vaccines: (1) Cervarix is a bivalent vaccine that protects you against HPV types 16 and 18. (2) Gardasil is available in quadrivalent and non-valent forms that protect you against HPV strains 6, 11, 16 and 28 (and 31, 33, 45, 52, and 58 in nine-valent or Gardasil 9). — The WHO now recommends one or two-dose schedules for girls aged between 9 and 14 years, one or two-dose schedules for girls and women aged between 15 and 20 years and two doses with a six-month interval for women older than 21 years. Therefore, option (b) is the correct answer. 3. (c) FYI: — The Zojila tunnel will be India’s longest road tunnel and is expected to be Asia’s longest bi-directional tunnel, boasting a length of 14.15 km. The tunnel will connect Srinagar and Leh. — The upcoming Zojila tunnel will provide perennial connectivity between Ladakh and the rest of the country. This will benefit civilians living and employed in the region and the military by expediting the movement of troops and supplies in this vitally important strategic region. — A connecting tunnel from Z-Morh on NH1 to the Zojila tunnel will be built in the Zojila Ghats between Sonmarg and Kargil. The work on the entire 33-km span is spread between two union territories – Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. — During harsh winters, this route is closed due to fears of avalanches, landslides and slippery roads, with areas beyond the pass cut off from the rest of the country for at least five months. Therefore, option (c) is the correct answer. 4. (a) FYI: — Web3 is built on top of existing Internet infrastructure and not in competition with previous versions of the web platform. It allows for the creation and exchange of digital assets, decentralised applications (dApps), and smart contracts in the blockchain system. — Web3 is that it provides users with greater control over their data and digital assets. Instead of relying on centralised intermediaries, it offers options and mediums for an individual to have more privacy and, more importantly, security of the content and transactions. — It allows for peer-to-peer transactions and interactions, which means that users can control their data and choose whom they share it with. Hence, statement 1 is correct. — Web3 has the ability to create and use decentralised applications (dApps) and smart contracts. These dApps can be used for various purposes, such as social media, finance, gaming, and more. Hence, statement 2 is correct. Difference between Web 2 and Web 3 Characteristics Web 2 Web 3 Centralisation vs. Decentralisation Web2 is centralised, meaning that data is stored on centralised servers owned and controlled by large corporations. Web3 is decentralised, meaning that data is stored on a decentralised network of computers that are owned and controlled by the users themselves. Intermediaries vs peer-to-peer Web2 relies heavily on intermediaries such as banks, social media platforms, and online marketplaces to facilitate transactions and interactions. Web3 enables peer-to-peer transactions and interactions, meaning that users can transact directly with one another without the need for intermediaries like banks, for example. Data ownership and control In Web 2, large corporations like Facebook and Google have significant control over user data and can monetise it in ways that users may not be comfortable with. In Web2, users must trust intermediaries to secure their data and transactions. Hence, statement 3 is not correct. In Web3, users can only share data with those they trust. In Web3, users can trust the network itself to keep their data and transactions secure. Therefore, option (a) is the correct answer. 5. (b) FYI: — The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) defines fortification as “deliberately increasing the content of essential micronutrients in a food so as to improve the nutritional quality of food and to provide public health benefits with minimal risk to health”. — The fortified rice kernels are blended with regular rice to produce fortified rice. Under the Ministry’s guidelines, 10 g of FRK must be blended with 1 kg of regular rice. — The fortification of food is considered to be one of the most suitable methods to combat malnutrition. Rice is one of India’s staple foods, consumed by about two-thirds of the population. Per capita rice consumption in India is 6.8 kg per month. Therefore, fortifying rice with micronutrients is an option to supplement the diet of the poor. — According to FSSAI norms, 1 kg of fortified rice will contain the following: Iron (28 mg-42.5 mg) Folic acid (75-125 micrograms) Vitamin B-12 (0.75-1.25 microgram). — Rice may also be fortified with zinc (10 mg-15 mg), vitamin A (500-750 microgram RE), vitamin B-1 (1 mg-1.5 mg), vitamin B-2 (1.25 mg-1.75 mg), vitamin B-3 (12.5 mg-20 mg) and vitamin B-6 (1.5 mg-2.5 mg) per kg. Therefore, option (b) is the correct answer. 6. (c) FYI: — The energy density of lithium-ion cells used in today’s mobile phones and electric vehicles is nearly four times higher than that of older-generation nickel-cadmium batteries. Hence, statement 1 is correct. — Lithium-ion batteries use aqueous electrolyte solutions, where ions transfer to and fro between the anode (negative electrode generally made of graphite) and cathode (positive electrode made of lithium), triggering the recharge and discharge of electrons. Hence, statement 2 is correct. — Lithium-ion batteries are seen as sufficiently efficient for phones and laptops, but they still lack the range that would make EVs a viable alternative to internal combustion engines. — One major problem is that lithium metal is extremely reactive. The main form of lithium corrosion is dendrites, which are branched lithium structures that grow out from the electrode and can potentially pierce through the separator and onto the other end, short-circuiting the cell. — In current lithium-ion batteries, in which the electrolyte is a flammable liquid, dendrite formation can trigger a fire. Therefore, option (c) is the correct answer. 7. (b) FYI: — It was launched on April 14, 2023, on an Ariane 5 from the European Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. — JUICE or the Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer Mission is a European Space Agency (ESA) mission that will make multiple flybys past Jupiter’s moons Ganymede, Callisto and Europa before going into orbit around Ganymede. Hence, statement 1 is not correct. — The mission will help scientists understand more about Jupiter and its system, with a focus on finding out whether Ganymede can host life. — The primary science objectives for Ganymede (most of these apply to Callisto as well) are: (1) Characterization of the ocean layers and detection of putative subsurface water reservoirs; (2) Topographical, geological and compositional mapping of the surface; (3) Study of the physical properties of the icy crusts; (4) Characterisation of the internal mass distribution, dynamics and evolution of the interiors; (5) Investigation of the exosphere; and (6) Study of Ganymede's intrinsic magnetic field and its interactions with the Jovian magnetosphere. Hence, statement 2 is correct. — For Europa, the focus is on the chemistry essential to life, including organic molecules, and on understanding the formation of surface features and the composition of the non-water-ice material. Therefore, option (b) is the correct answer. Other Source: (nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov) 8. (d) FYI: — Irradiation does not make foods radioactive, compromise nutritional quality, or noticeably change the taste, texture, or appearance of food. In fact, any changes made by irradiation are so minimal that it is not easy to tell if a food has been irradiated. Hence, statement 2 is not correct. — Food irradiation (the application of ionizing radiation to food) is a technology that improves the safety and extends the shelf life of foods by reducing or eliminating microorganisms and insects. Like pasteurizing milk and canning fruits and vegetables, irradiation can make food safer for the consumer. Hence, statement 1 is correct. — The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is responsible for regulating the sources of radiation that are used to irradiate food. — The FDA approves a source of radiation for use on foods only after it has determined that irradiating the food is safe. Benefits of Irradiation — Prevention of Foodborne Illness – to effectively eliminate organisms that cause foodborne illness, such as Salmonella and Escherichia coli (E. coli). Hence, statement 3 is correct. — Preservation – to destroy or inactivate organisms that cause spoilage and decomposition and extend the shelf life of foods. — Control of Insects – to destroy insects in or on tropical fruits imported into the United States. Irradiation also decreases the need for other pest-control practices that may harm the fruit. — Delay of Sprouting and Ripening – to inhibit sprouting (e.g., potatoes) and delay ripening of fruit to increase longevity. — Sterilization – irradiation can be used to sterilize foods, which can then be stored for years without refrigeration. Sterilized foods are useful in hospitals for patients with severely impaired immune systems, such as patients with AIDS or undergoing chemotherapy. Therefore, option (d) is the correct answer.
