Weather forecast Today India Highlights: A day after Mumbai was faced with a deluge like situation, the city Thursday is likely to continue receiving moderate to heavy rainfall. In last 24 hours ending at 8.30 am this morning, 38.3 mm of rainfall was recorded at the Santacruz observatory while Colaba recorded 52.2 mm.

Meanwhile, rain-related incidents claimed 54 lives in Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh while six more persons died in flood-hit Assam on Wednesday, news agency PTI reported. The Met department has predicted heavy rains in isolated places across Uttar Pradesh Thursday, as well as in eastern and northern regions of the country, including Delhi. Intermittent spells of rain are also expected in Kerala’s Kannur and Kasargod districts.

Light showers in parts of Uttar Pradesh

With traces of rainfall, state capital Lucknow recorded a high of 31.1 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 24.6 degrees Celsius on Thursday, the Met Office said. According to the meteorological department, some parts of the state were lashed by showers. Meerut received 100.6 mm rain followed by Bareilly (50 mm), Muzaffarnagar (39.2 mm), Bahraich (8.8 mm), Moradabad (10.0 mm) and Orai (2.1 mm), the official said. Basti was the hottest place in the state where maximum temperature settled at 34.5 degrees Celsius. The meteorological department further said that heavy rain is "very likely" to occur at isolated places in the state on July 26 while thundershowers are likely at many places on July 27 and 28. Palghar's Dahanu, Talassery hit by at least 7 mild earthquakes since last night

Since last night, Dahanu and Talassery towns in Palghar district have been hit by at least 7 mild earthquakes. This morning, between 1:05 am and 1:13 am, two quakes with the magnitude of 3.6 was experienced in the region. From November 2018 till 2019, the region has witnessed at least 35 earthquakes. Panic has spread across citizens due to incessant rainfall and tremors in the area.

Rains bring relief from hot, humid weather in Kashmir

Heavy rainfall in most parts of Kashmir on Thursday brought respite to the valley residents from two weeks of hot and humid weather, even as the downpour affected normal life in Srinagar leading to waterlogging in many city roads.

The rain which started as a drizzle around 7.45 am turned into a downpour as the day progressed, leading to waterlogging in many areas of the city, including the commercial hub of Lal Chowk and adjoining areas, officials said. The Meteorological Department has forecast more rainfall over the next 24 hours. Fresh spell of rains lash parts of Rajasthan

Several areas in Rajasthan received fresh rainfall on Thursday morning, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said, adding that since Wednesday, Sikar recorded the maximum rainfall of 116.2 mm, followed by Pilani (83.2 mm), Vanasthali in Tonk (71.2 mm), Jaipur (70.5 mm) and Kota (61.4 mm). Waterlogged roads affected the routine life of the people in the state. Many areas in Jaipur faced traffic congestion due to rain. (PTI)

Boy swept away during downpour in Rajasthan

A teenage boy was washed away in a drain during torrential rain in Sikar district of Rajasthan on Thursday, police said. The boy, aged around 15, was standing near the swollen nullah (drain) when he slipped into it and was swept away in fast-moving waters, Station House Officer, Khatushaymji, Surendra Kumar Saini said. IIT researchers find changes in summer rainfall pattern in country

River basins having surplus water have experienced decreased rainfall while those with deficit water have seen an increase in precipitation, a study by IIT researchers on Indian summer rain pattern has revealed. The study conducted by a team of researchers from IIT-Madras and IIT-Bombay also found that regions with excess moisture in the air do not always experience more rainfall from convection process, contrary to the common belief. IMD says, "With the likely southward shift of the monsoon trough and probable formation of a low pressure area over coastal areas of West Bengal around 26th July, the intensity of rainfall over Assam & Meghalaya and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim has reduced significantly."

3 more deaths due to lightning reported in Jharkhand, toll touches 15

Three more deaths due to lightning strikes have been reported in Jharkhand, taking the toll in the state to 15, a senior police official said on Thursday. On Wednesday, 12 people were killed by lightning in four districts of the state - six in Jamtara and two each in Dumka, Pakur and Ramgarh.

Kinner Kailash Yatra suspended this year due to bad weather

IMD has predicted light to moderate rain/thundershowers in the districts of Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Solan, Sirmaur & Shimla in Himachal Pradesh during the next three hours. Earthquake jolts Maharashtra’s Palghar, woman killed in house collapse

The flood situation in Assam continues to remain grim, with the toll mounting to 74 following the death of six more people. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), floodwaters have inundated vast swathes of 20 of all 33 districts in the state, affecting 38.82 lakh people.

Of the six more deaths, one person died each in Nalbari, Barpeta, Dhubri and Golaghat districts and three were killed in Morigaon district, it stated.

Fourteen people were also killed across Uttar Pradesh in rain-related incidents since Tuesday. Of the total, seven deaths took place on Wednesday. These include three in Aligarh due to wall collapse following heavy rains, two in Rae Bareli, and one each in Banda and Mirzapur due to lightning strike, according to an official statement. Rain is very likely at most places over the state on July 26 and at many places over the state on July 27, the weather office said.
