Goa Liberation Day 2024: Goa Liberation Day, as the name suggests, commemorates the liberation of Goa in 1961, even though India became independent in 1947.
Goa was under 450 years of tyranny under Portuguese colonial rule, and with the efforts of the Indian Armed Forces, Operation Vijay was launched, a strategic military operation that successfully liberated Goa.
Today, we honor the progressive journey of Goa’s development and the strides we’ve made towards achieving our dream of a ‘Golden Goa’. Heartfelt wishes to all my Goan brothers and sisters on the occasion of #GoaLiberationDay.

As we mark the day today, here is all you need to know about the day.
After years of diplomatic efforts to secure Goa’s independence from Portugal, Operation Vijay was executed by India from December 17 to 19, 1961, aimed at liberating Goa from Portuguese colonial rule.

The military hostilities commenced on December 17, and within just 36 hours, Indian forces had successfully invaded most of Goa.
On December 19, 1961, the Portuguese Governor-General Vassalo e Silva surrendered, marking the liberation of Goa and Daman and Diu, thereby making them part of the Indian Union and granted full statehood in 1987.
As a result, Goa Liberation Day is annually marked on December 19, and in 2024 it will be observed on Thursday.
The operation was a significant moment in India’s post-colonial history, demonstrating the country’s resolve to integrate all its territories.
It also pays tribute to the military personnel who sacrificed their lives during Operation Vijay and liberated Goa from Portuguese colonial rule.
The day is marked by vibrant celebrations across the state, featuring official ceremonies, military parades, and cultural events that honour the brave freedom fighters and soldiers who fought for Goa’s independence.
