Nepal’s Left Alliance opposes delay in polls

The alliance’s stand came a day after the court cited the law and sought details from the EC about preparations made for separate ballot papers for the polls within three days.

The alliance’s leaders, K P Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal, both former Prime Ministers, said that the Election Commission (EC) should ignore “any move from any quarter” if that delays the elections on November 26 and December 7.

The alliance’s stand came a day after the court cited the law and sought details from the EC about preparations made for separate ballot papers for the polls within three days.

The alliance underlined that the elections have to take place before January 21 for political stability.

It said that if the polls are not held as per schedule, it will be taken as an anti-democratic move.

The two leaders asked the EC to go ahead with the polls as scheduled.

Any obstruction to the poll schedule will amount to interfering in the people’s right to vote, they said.

The alliance said that the EC had accepted suggestion of major political parties to have ballot papers for federal and provincial polls on a single sheet.

It asked Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba to clarify his stand before the court.

Earlier, Dahal said Parliament that stood dissolved with the beginning of the election process would be revived if the polling dates are altered.
