US President Donald Trump interacted with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos over a call after it was reported that the e-commerce giant was planning to show customers how much tariffs are being added to product prices, and the president said it was a “good call”. The move by Amazon, first reported by Punchbowl News, would have allowed the customers to see the tariff amount which comes with the item’s price but the company clarified that it was itemising the impact of tariffs on Amazon Haul which is a low cost site launched to compete with the likes of Shein and Temu. However, Amazon said that it has declined to move forward with the idea and clarified that the plan was never meant for its main platform, BBC reported. Q: "How did you call with Jeff Bezos go?" President Trump: "Great. Jeff Bezos was very nice. He was terrific. He solved the problem very quickly. He did the right thing. He's a good guy." pic.twitter.com/ppaBxeLZJr — CSPAN (@cspan) April 29, 2025 Asked by reporters outside the White House about the controversy, Trump said he has had a “good call” with Jeff Bezos and that he was “very nice”. “He solved the problem very quickly and he did the right thing,” Trump said before leaving for the rally in Michigan to mark 100 days of his second tenure. Earlier, the White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt criticised Amazon for considering the idea to showcase tariff prices on products and called it “a hostile and political act.” “Why didn't Amazon do this when the Biden administration hiked inflation to the highest level in 40 years?” Leavitt said, adding that she had already spoken to President Trump regarding the issue. Referencing about the need to bring manufacturing back to America, Leavitt said “It’s another reason why Americans should buy American.” She highlighted a 2021 report by Reuters which linked Amazon to “Chinese propaganda arm.” Since coming back to office in January, Trump has been imposing high tariffs in hope to boost manufacturing and raise tax revenue for the US, while several foreign imports currently face 10% duty, Chinese products are facing 145% tariff.
