Vice President-elect JD Vance clarified his stance on pardoning Capitol rioters, stating that individuals who committed violence on January 6, 2021, “obviously shouldn’t be pardoned.” Speaking on Fox News Sunday, Vance stated that peaceful protesters could be considered for clemency, but acknowledged a “grey area” in certain cases.

President-elect Donald Trump has pledged to grant clemency to many involved in the Capitol siege, promising swift action once in office. “Most likely, I’ll do it very quickly,” Trump recently said on NBC’s ‘Meet the Press.’ However, he noted exceptions, saying, “If somebody was radical, crazy, I have to look.”

The Capitol attack resulted in over 1,500 federal charges, ranging from misdemeanors for illegal entry to felonies for violent assaults on police officers. Extremist group leaders, including those from the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys, were convicted of seditious conspiracy for plotting to disrupt the transfer of power from Trump to President Joe Biden.

In response to criticism from rioters’ supporters, Vance reiterated his commitment to justice. “I assure you, we care about people unjustly locked up,” Vance posted on X, adding that his and Trump’s approach to reviewing cases individually “is not some walkback.”

Trump’s presidency begins on January 20, with clemency for Capitol rioters expected to be a key point of controversy.
