Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, who has been tasked by US President Donald Trump to root out what he says is government waste via Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), on Monday renewed his threat to fire federal workers who do not respond to his email regarding the work done in the particular week.
Confusion and chaos spread throughout the workforce as Trump praised Musk’s technique and stated, “What he’s doing is saying, ‘Are you actually working?’” Trump said that it was a “genius” idea by the entrepreneur, adding “And then, if you don’t answer, like, you’re sort of semi-fired or you’re fired, because a lot of people aren’t answering because they don’t even exist.”

The Office of Personnel Management, US agency that oversees federal employees, said on Monday that the workforce are not required to respond to an email by Musk that required them to summarize their work or face losing their jobs, the deadline of which is 11:59 pm EST Monday.
Meanwhile, Musk in a series of posts on X said “The email request was utterly trivial, as the standard for passing the test was to type some words and press send! Yet so many failed even that inane test, urged on in some cases by their managers.”

Threatening the federal employees with a possible termination, Musk said “Subject to the discretion of the president, they will be given another chance. Failure to respond a second time will result in termination.”
However, the Trump administration officials have reportedly said that they can “ignore” the public decree from Musk to provide summaries of their work done last week, reported Washington Post. The conflicting directives to the federal workforce have led to a situation of chaos and confusion.
