The Election Commission of India Saturday announced the dates for the Sikkim Assembly elections, which will be held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha polls. The voting for the state’s 60 assembly seats will be held on April 19, with the counting to take place on June 4.
The northeastern state is also among the seven states going for Assembly polls along with the Lok Sabha elections.
Sikkim Krantikari Morcha-led government currently rules the state with Prem Singh Tamang serving as the Chief Minister. People of the state will be electing 32 members for the 11th legislative Assembly.
The tenure of the present government is scheduled to end on June 2. The ruling SKM has 17 seats in the Assembly, the prominent ones being Yoksam-Tashiding, Yangthang, Gyalshing-Barnyak, and Poklok-Kamrang.
In 2019, the Sikkim Democratic Front, which had been the dominant party in the state for 25 years, was defeated by two seats. The SKF emerged victorious with 17 seats while SDF won 15. Even though the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Indian National Congress and the Hamro Sikkim Party contested the polls, none of the parties secured a single seat.
