Check and separate

Inspect all grains carefully. If one batch is infested, others may be too. Avoid mixing old stock with new to prevent spreading the bugs.

Freeze to kill bugs

If sunning isn’t possible, freeze the grains for 3–4 days. The cold effectively kills both eggs and larvae.

Clean containers thoroughly

Scrub storage containers with hot water and soap. Dry them completely before use to avoid moisture and re-infestation.

Use natural bug repellents

Add neem leaves, bay leaves, cloves, or garlic pods in containers. These confuse pests and deter egg-laying.

Choose the right storage

Use airtight glass or metal containers. Avoid plastic bags in humid weather as they trap moisture and worsen infestations.

Avoid common mistakes

Sieving only removes visible bugs, not eggs. Don’t mix new and old grains. Also, clean nearby grain types like atta or besan to stop the spread.
